At this year’s CHINACOAT 2009 Conference—Automotive Finishes: Focusing on the Key Aspects of Durability & Ecology—which was held on Nov. 16-17, Heubach’s Dr. Lutz Frischmann, head of business unit Inorganic Colored Pigments, presented the lecture: “Going Eco—the Striking Performance of Modern Hybrid Pigments.” The lecture explore the way innovative and novel pigments can contribute to meet today’s ecological problems. This is particularly true in the case of improving the energy efficiency of cars. Minimizing fuel consumption would be a great step forward, according to Dr. Frischmann. In his lecture he said modern and innovative pigments are able to reflect NIR-radiation and hence able to reduce inside-car air conditioning leading to a lower energy consumption. If these pigments show beyond this a favorable environmental performance evaluation for their production compared to other common alternatives these pigments would really be ecologically significant. After his PhD in organic chemistry from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany in 1999, Dr. Frischmann started his career in industrial coatings and pigment preparations with AkzoNobel Industrial Coatings, Stuttgart. Also within AkzoNobel Coatings, he served as the manager of the center of excellence “Two-Layer-Systems” for automotive OEM. In 2004, he joined the international technical service department of Kronos International as the manager of the coatings group responsible for the use of titanium dioxide in coatings, paints, varnishes and inks. Dr. Frischmann has been with Heubach since September 2006 as the head of the business unit Inorganic Colored Pigments.
